To Beep or Not to Beep

So, I am having trouble deciding what the appropriate use of the car horn is...
Are there specific rules for beeping? What was the horn's original purpose?

I never used to use my horn- not even to let people know I was sitting outside of their house. I just felt like it was a little too assertive and loud.. maybe even rude/mean. (my horn also sounds like a clown car horn or what beeker's nose sounds like when you squeeze it...).

So a couple years ago, I started to feel more comfortable honking at other cars when they were about to cut me off or if I knew someone and wanted to wave "hi". I would also honk if I wanted to scare a BFF who was walking in front of my turned off car and didn't know anyone was inside (if you have never done this, i highly suggest you try it at least once)!

Well I think I have crossed over the line and have become an obnoxious horn user. Here are 2 recent incidents of inappropriate honking:

1. I was in a long line of cars waiting for the green arrow to make a left turn.. this is the longest light ever and if you miss the first round it takes FOREVER to get to the next cycle (maybe even 2 min!). So we get the green arrow and it looks like I am about to make it when all the sudden the car in front of me starts to slow down... NOOO! what are you doing!!! then the car almost comes to a stop... so naturally, I proceed to LAY on my horn.. the next thing I know, the driver leans out his window and hands some loose change to the homeless guy at the corner... whoops.. i felt a little ashamed when I had to drive by the homeless man.. (but i did make the light)!

2. I was driving home and there was this big white car stopped at the top of the hill not moving in my lane- even though the light was green. As I got closer I decided to honk at him just to let him know that he was stupid and in the way.. but then as I passed him I realized it was a police man helping the car in front of him who had broken down.... whoops again.

so maybe I will just go back to honking at friends? it's a tough world we live in..

And now for something completely different...

so.. i am kind of bored about blogging about my hair.. I did buy some shampoo from whole foods "audrey organics" brand, because it had all natural oily stuff.. i like! although, my hair smells like a hippy.. and still mostly using baking soda/acv.

anyways..

Earlier this summer I found my old Agenda/Journal from 1996- which is the year I moved back from Brazil to the United States. Brazilian Journals (called agendas) are different than American ones- in Brazil you buy a day planner and make that your journal- you decorate it with pictures, magazine pics or any souvenirs from that day and you attach things with paper clips so the book gets fat..

This was a really interesting journal to read through because that was such a hard year for me- moving back to the home land..

so anyway, I wanted to see what I wrote on today's date and here is the entry:
(I was visiting my friend Kristen in Boston..and I will translate the portuguese words in parenthesis..)

"we had muitos (a lot) of mix ups. Primeiro (first), we kept missing Alli. Ela foi para (she went to) Harvard Square but we woke up late, so we got there and she had left, so we left but then she had gone back, so we went back but she left, but we called her so she came back. Then we went to this party but it's tomorrow. Kris and I streaked our hair purple and that's why I'm writing in it (purple marker). I got a zero shirt for Alina. coool. Like, Ashleigh"

haha..wow!
some observations:
1. I talk exactly the same as I did when I was 14.
2. Life before cell phones was hard.
3. I thought it would be funny to sign like, ashleigh instead of love, ashleigh.
4. I streaked my hair purple! haha so funny. i wonder what i would have been like if i went to public school in boston intead of private school in annapolis... hmmmm.
5. I miss speaking half english/portuguese.

I think I will periodically post things from that agenda or journal- i found my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ones which have been hilarious to read through!

like, ash.

no more poo- 55-61

I feel like I am procrastinating HARD CORE on the olive oil thing- I don't know what the barrier is here.. I have been really busy- so I just feel like I don't have the time to commit! AND I haven't been using shampoo- but I have been using conditioner-- seriously dudes it is just way too humid!!! I feel like i need some heaviness to the ends- and they were getting out of control.. stop judging me! :-) haha..

I think it's more the thought of doing the work like mixing the ingredients- even though it takes 30 sec to make- but the after process- i feel like I have to fully blow dry to get the full effects- and sometimes i just don't have the times.. so i think I am going to go to whole foods and just get some stuff there- (I think I have been saying that for the past 2 months!).

so here is a cool link I found on their website: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/pdfs/pbc-booklet.pdf
not super informative but gives a good concepts- like it doesn't get super specific like the other link i posted via misie last week..

also my aunt found this cool shampoo which I am really wanting to try!!!

also- this is completely unrelated but my friend Natalie started a blog and it's really funny... http://mochajavachip33.blogspot.com/

no more poo 49-54

so my post just got deleted! ahh.. basically all I said was that I am going to try the olive oil in my hair either tonight or tomorrow...

After doing some research after the avocado debacle, I think I am going to just put the olive oil in my hair and NOT my scalp to prevent over oily-ness. and also I am going to do the treatment for only 10 minutes and then shampoo with the BS AFTER the treatment (apparently that is what I should have done with the avocado.. sheesh)..

I feel like I am changing too many variables but that's okay... It also said I should warm up the olive oil in the micro before I use it... we shall see...

anyhoo.. that's all for now...

i may start posting about other subjects here .. that are UN-Hair-related... just so it's not a shock for the 4 people reading this. :-)

No More Poo day 35-48

So I don' have much more to post about in this blog-

I caved and used shampoo 2x over the last two weeks- one was because I was too overwhelmed and stressed out at the thought of mixing my shampoo/conditioner- and the second time I was traveling and didn't feel like it.

I've said this before, but the only noticeable difference is that when I use the BS/ACV I can't run my fingers through my hair when it's wet.. but when it dries I can. So I think all i need to do to remedy that is to 1. get over it and 2. buy an thick tooth comb for the shower.

I have also thought about trying some olive oil (Dr. Oz said to basically bathe in olive oil while you are drinking it to be healthy) to make my hair more silky- but after the Mayo/avocado incident I am a little wary.. I will try it though.

COOL WEBSITE!

Has anyone heard about this shampoo: http://livingproof.com/product/nofrizz/lp3a.php

I'm intrigued...

Misie sent me this article which I thought was pretty interesting- it was also an advertisement, so I am not sure how biased it is- it would probably be worth it to do actual research in medical journals to investigate but after grad school I decided I would never do research again. So oh well.. :-) Internet articles and pop culture it is! Check it out!

I might buy this for when I feel like I need to just use shampoo quick or I am traveling... hmmmm...

No More 'Poo day 33-34

So... yesterday I woke up and my hair was like a major grease ball.. for some reason i thought if i slept on it, it would even out.. not true.

My hair looked like a middle aged man who uses moose and side parts his hair and you can see where the bristles of the comb went through his hair...

so I tried rinsing again in the shower.. and that didn't work... so I used SHAMPOOO! gasp- i needed to dry it out.. I used my aussie shampoo, and I could tell that didn't work.. so i went for the big guns- I used the Neutrogena T-Gel--- yah.. that worked! so my hair is back to normal..

sheesh...

no more poo day 21-32

no major updates..

I tried washing my hair with just the baking soda- and yah, not so much. I mean, it was fine, except that the vinegar adds a certain je n'sais quoi ... if ya know what i mean! haha...

I do have a major FAIL!

Today I decided my scalp was super itchy so i decided to try the mayo/avocado conditioner.. yah... this experiment failed on many levels.
1. I only had 1 hour to wash/condition/rinse/blow dry and then leave my house.. next time I will commit more time to this.
2. I did not mash up the avocado enough... I def had avocado floating around in my tub, and it clogged up the drain.. and I keep finding avocado remnants in random places around my bathroom...
3. I think I left it in too long.
4. I got over ambitious and mixed it with mayo.. but it was actually miracle whip.. i don't think it matters..

anyway.. I rinsed with the vinegar to make sure the smell would leave my hair.. yah.. it stinks.
and my hair is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo greasy.. .it's def shiny, but in a greasy disgusting way. like I dried it for like 10 minutes and it still looks soaking wet... and it's not like sleek sexy wet looking.. its like greasy chunks i didn't wash my hair for 3 weeks (which technically i didn't haha).... so yah.. I wouldn't recommend this to people whose hair is naturally on the oily side (and if you live in the south and its 95 + humidity)

Gahrosssss!!!!! I think I am going to sleep on it and then try and rinse it out in the morning.. ugh..

okay i just google searched home remedies for itchy scalp and a lot of them said to use olive oil, or coconut oil... but if you have oily hair just use the vinegar... opps! should have read better.. .it also said that it is a sign of dehydration ... And I didn not drink any water today... so that might make a big difference...

okay that's all for now..

Go USA (tomorrow) and Go Brasil (friday)

No more 'Poo day 21

Okay... immabeee honest- I gotta whole lotta product in my hair and I am loving it.

I went to Salon Blu yesterday and the washed/conditioned my hair and then Maggie cut all the dead off and a ton of the thickness out! yay and then she put something on it and straightened it.. and it feels sooooooo good! my hair feels so silky smooth and soft! I feel like I have shampoo bottles for eyeballs now.. but I know it's just a facade- It's like going to the Emerald City- it seems so nice and sparkley but it's really just a fake Wizard guy and poppyseeds or something.. (listening to too much Wicked soundtrack)..

Anyways.. I left the salon feeling very confused. Which way is the right way? Natural or Chemical. My heart/head are telling me Natural but my hair/hands-thru-my-hair are telling me Chemical! ahhhh! I need to detox from this experience! :0)

I think cutting 1 inch of dead hair off had a lot to do with it too.. So I think I am going to stick with the B/S and ACV.. And I think I am going to add either a Mayonnaise Conditioner, or Egg white conditioner..(i just looked up a ton of natural conditioners online and they look fun.. some have avocado in it-yummy!) ...maybe that will give me the silkiness that I miss from the conditioner.. I think the Mayo has vinegar, eggs, and etc in it anyway, so that should be fine..

Um, am I going to far? I need to keep going for at least 2 months and see if my hair is healthier because that is when my next hair appointment is.. So, if I do all the natural stuff, and my hair stays like "this" ie- healthy salon goodness by the time I go back to the salon, I will know it is working.

On a different note- I love the World Cup theme song AND the Glee Journey stuff! so good!

No More 'Poo 13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20

So no major updates- I think I am sold on not using Shampoo.. I feel like my hair looks good, and will continue to be healthier! woohoo!

The schedule I did last week where I waited 4 days between each wash- mistake! my hair was sooo greasy by day 4! but people said it didn't look greasy- but it totally was and felt disgusting.

I also tried doing the paste of baking soda instead of the cup of water- didn't like that.. too hard to rinse.

Pros so far:
*Cheap! (baking soda is 57 cents and ACV is like $4 and prob cheaper depending on where you go).
*Good results- shiny hair, clean scalp, and i think i am healing my hair oil pores? that's what the website said...
*easier to style my hair (curl, straighten)

Cons so far:
*Having to plan out when I am going to wash my hair- this is annoying.
*mixing my shampoo/conditioner every time - (not a huge con, more of an inconvenience)
*traveling- there is no way to do this traveling without being weird.

I think I am going to go to whole foods and buy one of their natural shampoos/conditioners so that when I travel I can use that and not have to bring vinegar and b/s.!

Today I am getting my hair cut!!!! yay! So I decided I am just going to let them wash my hair with the shampoo/conditioner more because I don't feel like explaining to them what I am doing. and it's only one time.. i don't feel like I am going to have to start all over.. it's like eating an ice cream sundae when you have been eating healthy for the last month... not great for you, but not going to kill you either.

I got a girl from my church to try this as well! yay! any other takers?! I think my friend Julie is almost on board..

No More 'Poo Day 7,8,9, 10, 11, 12

So, I know you are all on the edge of your seat, waiting to hear about how it went at the beach.. i know.. it's been eating you alive all weekend!

Well I washed my hair Friday morning (at least I think I did, I actually can't remember- haha) because I felt like I needed to go into the weekend strong, and I had a dinner party to go to that evening and I didn't want to be judged (ah, yes I did wash it, I remember now).

So, I went to the beach late Friday night, laid out all day Saturday, and even worked out (stupid warren made me!) and went in the ocean (tried not to get my hair wet). So I decided to rinse it out with just water, and then GASP, I did it.. I used conditioner on the ends.. I felt like I had too.. I didn't put it on my scalp though.. It felt so good when I put it on, made my ends feel so silky smooth.. but after I let it air dry out, my hair felt super sticky and gross.. no likey.. I ended up wearing it in a pony tail after it dried out.. Same thing next night, rinsed out with water and put some conditioner on the ends, and it made it feel sticky- and it probably dried out the ends more because the 2nd ingredient was alcohol. Gross.

One bad thing about this is that if I felt like my hair STANK! I jumped into the bay and I felt like my hair smelt like bay water the rest of the weekend.. but I guess I wasn't washing it with the BS so maybe if I had done that the smell would have gone away..

well, it's over- glad we were at an isolated beach- I didn't really wear makeup (aka, i forgot my makeup) so i didn't really care about appearances.. so it wasn't so bad.

It felt sooo good to wash my hair Monday night! I did the same drill (bs/acv -not mixed)- I feel like my hair is starting to look dull- but my roommate said it looked shiny (with out me prompting or compliment fishing!), so I guess it does! Thanks Sarah.

Anyway. I am really excited to get it cut next week. The ends just feel disgusting! It will be nice to cut all the dead off. Anyway, besides that no real noticeable difference.
The only tricky thing is that its sooo humid here, so I feel like I want to wash it every other day.. but I don't think I should do that.. so here is my plan:

1st day wash/blow dry
2nd day straighten
3rd day curl
4th day wash/blow dry ...

I think styling it makes it feel less greasy? not sure... we will see.. (i usually end up with a messy pony tail on top of my head, so it doesn't really matter anyway!)

No More 'Poo Day 5 and 6

So... I kind of hate myself a little more after writing/reading each of these entries... I am not a shallow person! I am a social worker! I go to BSF! I'm DEEP! I promise.. but I have to document this journey.. it is science.

:)

So I tried something different, I decided to mix my shampoo and conditioner.. so I mixed the baking soda and vinegar together.. and yes, it exploded.. but after that, I added the water and mixed it up. I decided I didn't like this because I felt like it was too hard to rinse out (and it exploded). And this time I blow dried (blew dried?) it right after and I found that to work much better... People, I am telling you.. the ACV+ cold water rinse makes your hair SOOOO SHINY! try it!

Today I curled my hair with my barrel curler and my curls HELD and I didn't put any product in it! They stayed in from about 8a to 2ish (then I put my hair in a pony tail bc it was like 90 today).. so I feel like that was amazing, w/o product my hair usually doesn't hold curl.. nice.

So..I am still not sure if I like this and it's making a difference or if I just WANT to like it so I am finding all my results to be positive (thank you research methods class).

Anyway.. I am not sure how this beach stuff is going to go, so hopefully it will work out well.. I am going to feel bad making the whole bathroom smell like vinegar... so I might not want to do bring that? I might just bring the baking soda. we shall see.

No More 'Poo Day 4

I decided to wash my hair with just water- and then massaged my scalp - and then brushed through it, and then I did the ACV conditioner.. I didn't dry it until I woke up this morning, and I think that was a mistake- it was way more greasy.. so I am not sure.. I guess I just have to trial/error until I get a good system.. I can't tell if my hair looks greasy to other people- it definitely feels greasy.. Actually I think my face just feels oily- but I am not sure if that is from living in NC, changing my moisturizer, or not using shampoo... too many variables! but again, it's only day 4.. I rescheduled my hair cut for June 10 and I am kind of nervous.. not sure what if I should just let them wash my hair with their salon stuff or if I should ask them not to use product.. hmm.. i guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it.. it's 16 days away, so I am sure one shampooing at that point won't matter...

So I am having a hard time deciding which are the best days to wash my hair.. I guess I am going to wash it tonight, and then I can wash it Friday... and then Monday? This is going to be hard this weekend because I am going to the beach.. hmmm... we shall see!

No More Poo Day 2 and 3

I don't think I am going to post every day because not that much changes but we shall see..
I ended up blow drying my hair, which I think was a good call- I noticed that my hair was super shiny! and the texture is smoother! I also brushed through it a ton-so that always helps.. the articles say to get a boar's head brush- but I just bought a new brush, so I am going to wait on that one. It rained this weekend and when my hair got wet i got subtle whiffs of vinegar, but it wasn't that bad. I haven't noticed it being majorly oily.. and my ends feel better- they look alive. My scalp kinda itches, but it always itches.. so that's not really a change...

I was talking about this at church and one of the ladies used to be a hair dresser and she thinks this is kind of silly- she stated that back in the 1900s people had hygiene issues and wore their hair in braids or up.. which she is totally right.. and she said my hair was probably getting dried out from the hair dryer and the straightener, not my shampoo.. but she said i might as well try, because all i have to do is wash it with shampoo if I decide to give up- not a high risk.

I do think she is right about the dryer/straightener, but in theory, I won't have to use them as much because my natural hair oils should control my waviness.. but who knows..

so I am not sure what to do next. I am not sure if I should wash my hair with just water or do the baking soda thing.. Or maybe I can rinse with water and then do the ACV for shine.. BC i think the BS is kind of harsh to use too often.. Maybe I will just do that once a week? or 2x.. not sure.. too many options!!!

No More 'Poo- Day 1.

So I am trying a new experiment with my hair and I thought I should blog about it, because that is what people do.

I usually get my hair done at Salon Blu, and I am mildly obsessed with my hairdresser Maggie, and do whatever she tells me. She is a genius... and expensive.. so I try to go every 10 weeks instead of the recommended 6-8.. and usually about week 7 I start to question that decision- my ends get really dry, and I sometimes break and go to "Great Cuts" or something like that and get a trim, because it just looks bad.. Anyway.. I talked to Maggie about this and she recommended that I stop washing my hair every day- and only do it about 2-3x a week max. So I did this, and liked the results..

Well, a couple weeks ago, I was getting that itch to go to great cuts, but I wanted to just hold out until my appointment.. and I happened to read an article (which I can't find now) talking about not using Shampoo any more.. which I thought was ridiculous.. but then I read some more articles about it.. the articles stated that shampoo was really only marked in the 1930s and before that people maybe washed their hair like 1ce a month.. The article suggested to just rinse the hair with water while massaging your scalp and then brush through it wet so the oils can run down and moisturize your hair... it warned that your hair might look like trash for 2-4 weeks but then you will have great results...so , i tried this for a week and yes, my hair was super oily because my scalp was not used to it.. but, my ends totally hydrated and came back to life! unfortunately i had to wash my hair because I had some important things coming up and didn't want to look lame.

Washing my hair with shampoo felt so good after being super oily all week.. but i noticed that my ends were totally dry again! So I did some more research online and found a Baking Soda shampoo and an Apple Cider Vinegar conditioner. So.. I decided to do it- and today is day one.

I mixed 1 tablespoon of b.s. with hot water and mixed it in a plastic bottle, and did the same with the ACV- except i did 2 tbsp to 1 cup of hot water... So it was a noticeable difference.. obviously there are no suds when you wash, and I was a little worried that my hair would smell like vinegar (it doesn't). And then I rinsed with cold water. I am going to try blow drying it...so yes. this is day one.. I hope I am on the 2 week end of my hair looking awful rather then the 4 week end.. but we shall see! I should post pictures.. none of the other articles had pictures.. which should tell me something!!!!

Here are some articles I read about it if you are interested- I like the NPR article the most because it shows how we as a society have been convinced that we need to wash our hair every day just thru advertising.. sheesh.
